Loving Day Wichita celebrates Supreme
Court decision: Loving vs. Virginia. In 1958, Virginia couple Mildred Jeter
& Richard Loving got married in Washington, D.C. The only problem was that their marriage was
illegal in Virginia because she was of Native American/African American descent
& he was Caucasian. They were arrested in the middle of the night in their
own bedroom. They decided to fight for their love. Finally, on June 12th 1967,
the Supreme Court ruled that prohibiting interracial marriage was
unconstitutional.
Our celebration takes place the second
weekend of June in honor of that historic date. We are open for anyone who is
in a mixed relationship, of mixed heritage of any and all races and anyone who
supports our mission to fight racial prejudice through education and build
multicultural community.
This is our 4th annual event. Don’t miss it
this year because this may be the last one! We will have lots of FREE FOOD including
some vegetarian BBQ and other dishes, games for the kids (and adults!) with prizes, a face
painter, booths from the Wichita vegetarian group, Sierra Club, the last of the Loving Day Wichita t-shirts and lots more, plus an opportunity
to tell the story of your love and hear the stories of others.
